Every community has it quirks. In Northtown, it was an old Petco. With a DMV inside.

I know, it sounds strange, a pet store with a Department of Motor Vehicles in the back. But for longtime North Kansas Citians like my husband, it's just the way it was. Even before I moved to North Kansas City, I knew about the odd couple. When I lived downtown and Charli Brown was just a puppy, neighbors told me about that Petco, the closest pet store to our neighborhood. It quickly became my go-to shop. It wasn't fancy. In fact, it was a little dingy. I often joked that it was like walking into an old computer running Windows 97. I imagined little upgrade signs sporadically popping up over aisles.Still, it was convenient. And when I relocated to North Kansas City, I became a regular. They kept the shelves stocked. And the customer service was mint. And who cares if it's weird having a DMV in there? It was handy.Puppy (Early Worms)

Jacqueline Wood So what if it smelled faintly of ferrets, gerbils and the like? There's nothing like getting a new license and picking up a bag of dog food on the way out. Talk about multitasking made easy. The dog days of the DMV are over, though. That old, gray block of a building on Burlington Street is empty and for lease. Even the red and blue Petco letters are gone. Driving past it brings on a bit of the blues. It's like something is missing that can never be replaced. There was a peculiar and charming kind of crazy about the combo that once was. Oh, well. Change is inevitable. DMV has moved. And Petco? It's a sad PC no more. It's been upgraded to Mac status. The new store (600 N.E. Vivion Road) is bright, shiny and fun. The lighting doesn't give off that old hospital vibe. It doesn't smell like a kennel. And the space is exclusively Petco's. The grand opening was Saturday, but on Friday Northlanders were already checking out the pet shop. Charli Brown was no exception. As soon as we walked in the doors, her nub of a tail stood at attention. She knew right away this wasn't a place she'd ever been. But as soon as she saw a familiar face, she started to do the happy, wiggle worm dance. Chloe, her groomer from the old location, was there and ready to bathe her. And that's when I realized the old Petco charm wasn't lost after all. It's just now the atmosphere finally matches the friendly personalities that work there. It's the people that make the neighborhood, not just the places.
