Help Pets Cope with Separation Anxiety

As your family gets back into the swing of work and school, don't forget that it's a different kind of adjustment for your pets.

The ASPCA points out that, especially if you have kids at home, your dog or cat has gotten plenty of extra attention, companionship and exercise. Beautiful weather and extended daylight hours make taking the dog for an after-dinner walk a pleasant possibility. Now, we're hunkering down for the winter — and the dog is wondering what he did wrong.

Pets love routine and they crave stimulation, so the changes September brings can hit them hard. This is especially true if you've used summer vacation to introduce a young pet into your home. This is a great tactic, because you've had plenty of time to train your pet and make him feel welcome. But like any youngster, a young dog or cat may have a harder time being alone.

When they get stressed out, dogs may take to chewing, barking, pacing or trying to dig their way out of the yard. Cats may miss the litter box or even pee in your shoe or on the bed. They're not trying to punish you, honest. They're just beside themselves with stress.

So what to do?

Turn on the charm. You can't shift your schedule, but make sure to give your pet as much attention as you can when you are home. Ask the kids to schedule 15 minutes of play time with the cat or dog when they come home from school, or dedicate yourself to a 20-minute walk or play session every night.

Get up and at 'em. Giving your pet some exercise first thing in the morning can take the edge off for the rest of the day. Get up 15 minutes earlier to go for a jog with the dog or run around the house trailing a cat dancer.

Make your departure rewarding. Help your pet associate the family's departure with positive things by offering a special treat. For dogs that like to chew, fill a hollow rubber chew toy with yummy dog food. Cats may enjoy rolling toys that make them work to extract treats. Provide these only when you go off for the day, and your pet may be having too much fun to notice you've left.

Consider daycare. Many cities have doggie daycare centers. You drop off your bouncy pooch on the way to work and pick up a very tired angel on the way home. They're a bit pricey — $25 to $45 a day — but that's cheaper than replacing the carpet. For a young and highly active dog, try a canine fitness facility that will provide structured, vigorous activity.

Buddy up. A companion may be just what your dog or cat needs to keep separation anxiety at bay. But this is not a panacea. Some pets will get more stressed by the perceived competition, and the new arrival may have its own issues, making it that much harder for you to take care of the duo. To see how your pet reacts to a companion, try fostering an animal from the shelter or borrow someone else's pet while they're on vacation.

Consider meds. Some dogs may develop full-blown separation anxiety, according to Petside.com. This can be treated with behavior modification as well as anti-anxiety medication.

Be compassionate. If your pet does engage in destructive behaviors when left alone, don't punish. This can make your animal's anxiety worse, leading to even more bad behavior. Instead, vow to help your dog learn to cope with spending more time alone by using the preceding tips.
